Vor 30 Jahren: 1975 Super-Hit "Love to love you baby" (produziert in München/Munich, West Germany)

Die farbige Interpretin hatte schon früh nur ein Hobby: Singen. Aber zum Entsetzen ihrer Eltern sang sie lieber in weißen Rock-Bands als im schwarzen Gospel-Chor ihrer Kirche.
Donna war schon immer ein Dickschädel. Daheim in Boston, in einer Familie mit vier weiteren Schwestern und einem Bruder, hatte sie frühzeitig gelernt, lernen müssen, sich durchzusetzen:
"Man mußte einfach laut reden, wenn man gehört werden wollte".
Eine kräftige Stimme bekam Donna - damals trug sie noch den Namen ihrer Eltern: Gaines - auch durch fleißiges Training. Im Schlafzimmer von Vater und Mutter machte sie Atemübungen und lauschte den Platten von Mahalia Jackson/Miriam Makeba (http://www.student.uni-oldenburg.de/torsten.christoph/m_makeba.jpg).

Mit 18 Jahren flog sie kurz entschlossen mit einer Freundin nach Europa, sang in München (Munich, Germany) für das Musical "Hair" (1968) vor und bekam prompt eine Rolle. Der erste Schritt auf dem Weg ins Showgeschäft. Die nächsten waren klein und mühevoll. Musical-Rollen am Theater, Background-Gesang im Studio. Andere Engagements folgten, die sie auch nach Wien brachten. Die attraktive junge Frau lernte dort den Schauspieler Helmut Sommer kennen, wurde schwanger, heiratete ihn und trug fortan den Namen Sommer, der später durch einen Schreibfehler zu Summer wurde.

Doch nach zwei Jahren war der Traum von der Ehe ausgeträumt, und Donna mußte künftig den Lebensunterhalt für sich und Tochter Mimi mit Treppenputzen und sporadischen Background-Singen verdienen. Im Studio wurde der Erfolgsproduzent GIORGIO MORODER auf sie aufmerksam. Er nahm mit Donna die Single "The hostage" (1974) auf, die nur ein mittelmäßiger Erfolg wurde, und hatte dann, zusammen mit seinem damaligen Partner PETE BELLOTTE die Idee zu der Stöhnorgie "Love to love you baby" (1975). Der aufreizende Song schlug diesseits und jenseits des Ozeans wie eine Bombe ein. Innerhalb von nur 6 Wochen gingen 1975 über 400 000 Exemplare des gleichnamigen Albums über den Ladentisch.

Der Eurodiscosound war damit geboren, und Donna Summer war ein internationaler Star. Durch dieses Lied abgestempelt als "Disco-Queen", mußte die begabte junge Dame erst einmal hartnäckig darum kämpfen, auch etwas anderes singen zu dürfen.

Millionenseller wie "I feel love" (1977), "Last dance" (1978) und "Mac Arthur Park" (1978) festigten ihren Ruf als Top-Disco-Star. Für ihre Alben bekam sie regelmäßig Gold und Platin. Sie bekommt sogar den "Oskar". Doch zäh verfolgte die stimmgewaltige ("Mac Arthur Park" besonders!) und wandlungsfähige Donna Summer ihren Weg weiter. Mit "Bad girls" (1979) bewies sie hervorragend, daß sie durchaus auch imstande ist, Rock ebenso gut wie einfühlsame Balladen, Gospel und R & B zu singen. Ihre in dieser Richtung strukturierten Alben wie "The wanderer" (1980), "Donna Summer" (1982), "She works hard for the money" (1983) und "Cats without claws" (1984) zeigten, daß sie auf dem richtigen Weg war. Auch sie wurden jeweils mit Gold und Platin ausgezeichnet, ohne jedoch Disco-Alben zu sein. Doch dann wurde es langsam stiller um den Top-Star.

Erst im Jahre 1987 gab es ein Wiederhören und Wiedersehen mit der Oscar-Preisträgerin. "All systems go" hieß das Album. 1989 gab's die nächste LP: "Another place and time", eine Produktion von Stock/Aitken/Waterman. "This time I know it's for real" war die berühmte Auskopplung aus der LP/MC/CD. Donna Summer trat dann auch wieder in der Bundesrepublik auf. In Mike Krüger's Show "Vier gegen Willi" (ARD, Bayerischer Rundfunk) hatte man sie groß gefeiert.

DONNA SUMMER - eine Karriere, die aus dem Märchenbuch stammen könnte. Auf der LP "Once Upon A Time" hat sie das "Cinderella"-Märchen abgewandelt. Es steckt viel von Donnas eigenem Leben drin ...

Donna Summer hat viele Jahre (1968 - 1977) in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (in München und in Altmoorhausen bei Oldenburg) gelebt. Amerika, das Land der unbegrenzten Möglichkeiten, hat sie wieder. Sie lebt jetzt auf dem Land in Kalifornien /USA (ihr vorheriger Wohnsitz war Los Angeles, Hollywood, standesgemäß mit Villa und Pool). Doch München, die kleine Zwei-Zimmer-Wohnung, der Ursprung- all das ist nicht vergessen. Manchmal fällt sie noch zurück in deutsche Redewendungen - und dann wird sie von ihrer Umwelt höchst merkwürdig betrachtet.

Übrigens:
Ihr damaliger Kirchenchorleiter erfüllte ihr nie den Wunsch sie solo singen zu lassen. Ihrem Selbstbewußtsein tat das dennoch keinen Abbruch - sie wußte, sie hatte eine gute Stimme.

I'll be back this weekend with a new Summer Fever pick and some new pictures from the KTU concert, but for tonight I want to catch you up on all the news and I want to post my report on the concert. I'm not sure if you could tell from my update the other night - but I had a great time! ;-) I do want to take this opportunity to answer one question for some of the new visitors to the site. The 2 new songs Donna sang the other night are called Dream-A-Lot's Theme (I Will Live For Love) and You're So Beautiful. Both are available on the new CD, The Journey: The Very Best Of Donna Summer.
You can get that CD pretty much anywhere these days.

Donna Summer - "First Lady Of Love" (June 07, 2000)

The new cd is out in stores in March, 2001.

The cd single for "Love is the healer" (July 2000) and I Will Go With You (July 1999) is out in stores now, with the maxi single part 2 to follow on the 20th of this month (July). There are 2 versions of the single currently available in stores, one with 6 tracks and one with 9 tracks. But there is a problem with some of the 9 track cds. Apparently there are some cds that list 9 tracks on the jewel box, but when you play the cd there are only 6 tracks. It seems to be a bad batch that got shipped out, so if you got a 9 track cd that only really has 6 just bring it back to the store where you bought it. Most places will offer you a refund or exchange. (But if you make an exchange - check the replacement copy
while you are still in the store to make sure it doesn't have the same problem.)

More numbers - Live And More Encore (Long-CD/MC 1999) slips a few places to #47 on the Billboard Top 200 Album chart. But don't panic - this is still very good. I understand that sales have slowed down a bit in the New York area (probably because the cd was sold out in many stores), but they are picking up everywhere else in the country. Just to put things in perspective, Live And More Encore is Donna's highest charting album since Cats Without Claws peaked at # 40 back in 1984.

     the date has been changed to the 18th instead of the 20th as originally reported.Update for
     trivia buffs: Did you know that the Donna was the act that opened this theater exactly 20 years
     ago? In fact this concert will be the 20th anniversary for the theater and I understand that the
     owner kept a large block of tickets aside for his personal use. So tickets to this show may
     become hard to get. If you're planning to attend this show, you should act fast to get tickets.
